FOCUS: FORM- COLOR - SHADOW, an exhibition of new photographs by Fort Worth artist Brian Moore, will be on display June 14-August 2 at William Campbell No. 101 Contemporary Art. An opening reception will be held Saturday, June 14, 6:00-8:00 p.m. The show will feature twenty new, large-scale photographs in high-contrast, vivid color. The minimal yet painterly abstract photographs elevate the mundane while uncovering the profound beauty found in simple forms.

"Art in its purest forms has always drawn my interest," says Moore. And in his quest for purity, the artist has distilled his subject matter down to the basics: line, color, and, texture. Bending and twisting paper, fabric, and sheets of foam, Moore sculpts his pristine forms by hand. He then employs light to extract every detail from his subject matter, accentuating the lushness, texture, and shadow play found among the folds and lines of each form. Moore's lighting techniques-honed over decades of work as a commercial photographer-emphasize every facet, while also creating a unique environment for each piece. Literally and figuratively, the light holds Moore's robust figures, activating their potential energy as they float atop their obsidian backgrounds, and transforming otherwise unremarkable materials into larger-than-life icons.

Moore's process is one that combines old-school methods with cutting-edge No. 107 technology. Shot on film with a large-format camera, the images are developed as transparencies and then scanned and printed onto aluminum panels. The sophisticated printing process utilizes a high-heat transfer to merge image with background, creating a complex and precisely layered piece wherein the photographed image is in, not on, its surface. The result is total physical and visual fusion of all the elements. True to the artist's purist philosophy, the images are achieved without any digital manipulation.

In the end, Moore works with tight precision to present slick, unadulterated, abstract photography. Conversely, he broadens the definition of his art form by incorporating sculpting techniques and the vision of a painter. The result is an amalgamation of disciplines that coalesce to bring Moore's concept of pure beauty into focus.

Brian Moore has exhibited work across the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex and throughout the region, including shows at the Dallas Center for Contemporary Art, No. 104 in Denver, and at the Arkansas Art Center in Little Rock. He began studying photography in high school, and continued in college, where he earned a degree in commercial photography. After graduation, Moore worked for years as both a fine art and commercial photographer. He has traveled to and lived in various places around the world, including Asia and Hawaii. These life experiences, coupled with a deep love of music and abstract art, continuously inform and inspire his creative work.
