An exhibition of new paintings by Fort Worth artist Carol Benson will be on display December 2 - January 15 at William Campbell Contemporary Art. An opening reception will be held Thursday, December 2, 5:00–8:00 p.m. The exhibition will include more than fifteen works that explore the house form as a metaphor for the human mind and its trappings. Highly personal in nature, the paintings also address universal concerns about stability, comfort, and emotional fortitude.

Benson’s houses are representational, at times loosely abstracted; however, every composition possesses a tight symmetry as the artist maintains a conscious sense of order. Striking each mark with great care, she has nurtured their development through a precise interaction of deliberate lines, shapes, textures, and colors. Reflection plays a multi-faceted role in the paintings, deepening the complexity of the content and creating a sense of the infinite. Further, it alludes to what lies under the surface, as it gives way to another dimension that at once reveals and obscures the subject matter.

The content and the materials, combined with the process, must come together with a sense of mystery for my work to be complete... The work is resolved when it has a formal as well as a psychological balance and answers are given, but questions still arise.

Layered, Wrapped, and Protected share a contrasted yet subtle palette that reveals the artist’s methodical, intricate process. All three offer visual and emotional sanctuary on their own terms while simultaneously contending with the mysterious dimension below. Layered employs overt geometric lines to create a seemingly impenetrable structure. Whatever the house encapsulates will remain safe inside. Wrapped accomplishes the same goal, this time with a delicately woven matrix of lines. The many pieces have fused together to become one protective entity. Protected, the lone transparent house, reveals its inner sanctum through an icy luminosity. Although delicate, the house remains solid and unyielding.

Kalahari Series IV evokes an atmosphere of heat and light. The potent, colorful lines spill down the canvas, gradually wavering and shimmering from the intensity. The house appears plush and cool, a visual respite from the heat. Perhaps the scene suggests a mirage—an ethereal shelter from the elements. Not surprisingly, the design for this house was inspired by a piece of fabric belonging to a dress that the artist’s grandmother handed down to her. In this regard, Benson has taken a personal, grounding element of her own history and made it universally significant.

Benson’s houses are the embodiment of family, stability, and structure, even in the midst of chaos. However, they are not simply representations of domesticity. Here, houses signify the complexities of the human psyche. They serve as rational touchstones in the varied and evolving landscape of one’s own mind.
