RAVEL, an exhibition of new works by Jeff Mueller and Harmony Padgett, will be on display March 24-April 28 at William Campbell Contemporary Art. An opening reception will be held on Spring Gallery Night, Saturday, March 24, 11:00 a.m.-9:00 p.m. RAVEL explores the threads of thought and process revealed as the artistic vision materializes. Deftly harnessing the highly expressive attributes of line and color, both Mueller and Padgett present abstracted, multi-layered works that emphasize each mark, its history, and the space it occupies.

Jeff Mueller plucks graffiti from urban structures, recontextualizing and elevating its text. In doing so, he takes focus off its original message and places it on the formal quality of the lines, colors, and shapes that compose it. Works on canvas examine the layering process happening underneath the graffiti: the patched wall, the mismatched paint, and the vestiges of earlier marks. In doing so, these reveal the history of the surface while simultaneously adding visual complexity.

Jeff Mueller / Harmony Padgett - R * A * V * E * L Other pieces lift the text from its surface altogether. Icy Rock consists of letters that have been cut out of wood, painted, stacked, and mounted directly onto the wall. Here, the text transcends its original purpose to become the actual subject matter, rather than a simple verbal expression. The meaning is no longer about the original thought, but about the vehicle delivering the message: its line quality, color, and texture. The letters' physicality becomes paramount here, as they sprawl throughout the space creating a veritable roadmap of the artist's process. Mueller transforms graffiti into high art, stripping it down to its essence and reconfiguring it as an abstracted and highly expressionistic emblem of contemporary art. "RAVEL refers to the process in which I create these works," remarks Mueller. "I am exploring ways to combine and compress the graffiti, shaping it into a conglomeration of texts and imagery."

Jeff Mueller / Harmony Padgett - R * A * V * E * L Harmony Padgett imbues surfaces with swaths of color and dynamic lines that coalesce and dance across the surface, recalling aspects of human and other natural forms. Largely about mark-making and process, her work employs layering and line integration to establish a record of the artist's creative path. Of this exhibition, she explains: "RAVEL, to me, references the intermingling of lines, whether that relates to a literal drawn mark, or a more cerebral lineage or ancestry of nature, or the untamed thread at the bottom of a sweater."

Padgett also has an ongoing interest in how science and nature coexist-whether harmoniously or in opposition-and her work continually explores the interaction between natural and manmade elements. This concept is made apparent in Tangent, which traces freeform (at times anthropomorphic) lines as they travel across the surface, moving through areas of bright pigment. The support has been integrated into the piece, as patterns and lines inherent in the wood appear from underneath. This additional layer emphasizes the conversation between organic and synthetic materials. In the end, the various layers fuse together to create a unique macrocosm of divergent yet complementary components. Mueller and Padgett share a fascination with the intricate relationships between mark and surface, regarding support material and spatial context as integral to the vitality of the work. In doing so, each one examines the interaction between physical and visual elements, as they relate to one another and to the whole.
