An exhibition of select works by gallery artists will be on display June 25–August 6 at William Campbell Contemporary Art. An opening reception will be held Saturday, June 25, 6:00–8:00 p.m. The exhibition will include two - and three - dimensional pieces by sixteen artists who present subtle yet compelling subject matter via a reduction to basic visual elements. The artists included in the exhibition are Kris Cox, Ken Dixon, John Fraser, Jake Gilson, Bernd Haussmann, Tom Hollenback, Otis Jones, Robert McAn, James Marshall, Brian Moore, Harmony Padgett, Scottie Parsons, Randall Reid, John Holt Smith, Kevin Tolman, and Cecil Touchon.

While such artists as James Marshall and John Holt Smith create pieces of hard-edged, slick precision, others, including Scottie Parsons and Randall Reid, take a more painterly, organic tack. Still others, namely Otis Jones and Cecil Touchon, follow a decidedly cerebral path toward lucidity. Despite these seemingly divergent approaches, the collection attains cohesion as each artist seeks aesthetic impact through an examination of purity in form, along with the interaction among elements and the space that contains them.

Harmony Padgett - #3

Harmony Padgett’s #3 highlights line, color, and texture in their purest states. The elements coexist on the surface, but do not cloud one another, thereby remaining individual and independent components of a larger abstract composition. While the surface drawings may allude to the representational, they retain enough ambiguity to translate as pure line. In this instance, the artist realizes subtle beauty by allowing the parts of the whole to remain individual and unadulterated.

Jake Gilson - Red Trough with Figure Jake Gilson’s Red Trough with Figure lures the eye with its bold, saturated color. Captivating and soft, the abstract red shape seems to float and churn, eventually seeping out into the area below, unifying the space and providing a sense of coherence between shape and figure. Here, the colors and lines emerge from the surface, as if they are being released. Gilson has employed subtle layering, creating complexity, even as his subject matter persists in its most elemental form.

Formally abstract and often minimal, the pieces comprising this exhibition broadly explore the most basic building blocks of any artwork: line, color, shape, and texture. Sometimes spare, sometimes complex, all the works rely on the subtle interaction among individual elements to engage and hold the viewer’s attention.

Allure: the Power of Subtle Attraction is curated by Sam Clark, who has been with William Campbell Contemporary Art as a gallery assistant for nearly two years. Originally from Atlanta, Ms. Clark attended Boston University, where she received her bachelor’s degree in Art History. Ms. Clark has had broad exposure to contemporary art and gallery operations, and before coming to William Campbell Contemporary Art she held various internships in Boston, Atlanta, and London. In addition to her work at the gallery, she is also a docent at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth.
